The
Literary History of Ireland
Niamh Hamill
- Instructor
Since the time
of the Celts, storytelling and poetry were an essential part of
the fabric of Irish life. The establishment of the monastaries and
the bardic schools transformed an oral tradition to a very powerful
literary movement. However, the concerted effort of the British
from the 1500's to the 1900's almost destroyed the whole history.
However, the cultural revival of the late 19th Century was an extraordinary
revival of the past in a new vernacular. The efforts of Yeats, Synge,
Lady Gregory, and many more revived Irish culture to be enjoyed
by future generations.
