'Paddy
Kavanagh, the unsung Irish poet'
Niamh Hamill
- Instructor
Patrick Kavanagh
was Ireland's first modern rural poet. Kavanagh came from Iniskeen,
County Monaghan, and was the first poet to explore the very Irish
themes of land, home, the relationship between the ordinary man
and his God, and the nature of the rural Irishman. These themes
had almost disappeared with the Gaelic poets, but Kavanagh reasserted
their importance and paved the way for later rural poets such as
Seamus Heaney.
